Biography

Nkoyo Toyo was born on 5 November 1958. She holds a law degree from Ahmadu Bello University (1975), was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1980, and went on to earn a Master of Laws from the University of Lagos, a master's degree in Governance from the University of Sussex, and a Master in Public Administration from the Harvard Kennedy School as an Edward S. Mason Fellow.

She worked as a state prosecutor and bank executive before moving into civil society, co-founding Gender & Development Action (GADA) in 1994 to advance women's economic and political participation in Nigeria. She served as Nigeria's Ambassador to Ethiopia and Djibouti and Permanent Representative to the African Union, and represented Calabar-Odukpani Federal Constituency in Nigeria's House of Representatives from 2011.

The ADC has named her its governorship candidate for Cross River State in the 2027 general elections.
