Biography
Atiku Abubakar was born on 25 November 1946 in Jada, in present-day Adamawa State. He began his career in the Nigeria Customs Service in 1969, rising to the position of Deputy Director before retiring in 1989 to focus on business, including real estate and co-founding the oil services company Intels Nigeria Limited. He later founded the American University of Nigeria in Yola.
He served as Vice President of Nigeria from 1999 to 2007 under President Olusegun Obasanjo. He has contested for the presidency in six previous elections. In 2025 he joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and won the party's presidential primary in 2026, becoming its candidate for the 2027 general elections.
